Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.

"We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love, and respect, each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this--there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

REM, the alternative rock group that shook up the music world with its experimental, edgy sound and then earned multiplatinum success and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, announced on its website that it has "decided to call it a day as a band."

"A wise man once said — 'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it," frontman Michael Stipe said in a statement on the website.

"I hope our fans realise this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way."

The Grammy-winning group, now composed of Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills, released its debut album Murmur in 1983; at the time it was a quartet, with drummer Bill Berry. He left the group in 1997, two years after he suffered symptoms of an aneurysm onstage.

The group got its start in Athens, Georgia, coming out of the region's flourishing indie-rock scene. The band was credited for helping launch college radio with songs such as Radio Free Europe.

Later, the mainstream caught on, and REM became chart-topping rockers, selling millions of albums with hits like It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Losing My Religion and Everybody Hurts.

Stipe, the band's chief songwriter, crafted songs that were atypical of the standard rock fare. Man on the Moon was about the late comic Andy Kaufman. Losing My Religion was not about religion at all, but about trying to relay the feelings of a crush.

The band's videos also became staples on MTV in the 1990s, including the eye-catching Losing My Religion and the stark Everybody Hurts, which had Stipe walking through a highway traffic jam.

REM became one of the more forceful voices of 1990s rock, and came along around the same time as another rock quartet — U2. But whereas U2 managed to maintain (and even increase) its popularity over the years, REM stumbled commercially in recent years, and their hits dwindled.

The band continued to create music that resonated with critics and their core group of fans; the group's last album, Collapse into Now, was released in March and a greatest hits retrospective is in the works.

But Mills said the band was running out of ideas.

"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'What next?'" he said. "Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realised that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together."

Buck said the band parts as "great friends" and thanked fans for their support.

"One of the things that was always so great about being in REM was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to our fans as they did to us," said Buck. "It was, and still is, important to us to do right by you. Being a part of your lives has been an unbelievable gift. Thank you."

Warner Bros Records chairman and producer Rob Cavallo said, "To call REM one of the greatest bands in contemporary music is an understatement. They leave behind a body of work whose breadth, honesty, creativity and power has not only inspired millions of fans around the world, but also has influenced — and will continue to influence — generations of songwriters and performers for years to come."

R.E.M. have broken up after 31 years of making music together.

The alternative rock band announced yesterday that they were going their separate ways after decades of touring and releasing hits.

Lead singer Michael Stipe, 51, guitarist Peter Buck, 54, and bassist Mike Mills, 52, have released 15 albums as a group including Murmur, Reckoning, Document, Out of Time, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Up and Automatic For The People.

"As lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," the group said in a statement on their official website.

"We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality and of astonishment at all we have accomplished."

Bill Berry, 53, who was the band's original drummer, retired in 1997 after 17 years rocking out with the band.

He went on to become a farmer in Georgia but has come back with the group from time to time for special events.

The band's last album, Collapse Into Now, was released in March of this year.

Rolling Stone reported that the band worked on some new material together in Greece this past northern hemisphere summer but it is unknown if the tunes will be released.

Michael Stipe has announced in a message posted to xoJane.com that he is at an Athens, Georgia recording studio working on a new R.E.M. album as a quick follow up to Collapse Into Now. Stipe, who is friends with site founder Jane Pratt – the woman behind the late, lamented Sassy magazine – has been sending real-time updates to her phone that have been shared on the site.

No details have been confirmed as yet.

Is it me or is Micheal beginning to look like Billy Joel?

Here's a sweet article from Rolling Stone Magazine in which Mike Mills has a wee chat about the up coming R.E.M. album, Collapse Into Now.

When R.E.M. began recording Collapse Into Now last year they decided to throw out the guidelines they imposed on their last album, 2008's Accelerate. "On the last one we tried to make everything focused, short, fast and sharp," Mike Mills tells Rolling Stone. "We took most of the rules off this time, picking the best songs regardless of whether they were fast, slow or mid-tempo."

The disc, which is due out early next year, reminds Mills of the band's 1992 classic Automatic For The People. "The songs go from one type into another really easily and it all seems to fit as a piece," Mills says. "It makes sense as a whole the same way that Automatic For The People did."

Produced by Jacknife Lee, the disc was recorded over the past year at studios in Portland, New Orleans, Nashville and at Berlin's legendary Hansa Tonstudio—where David Bowie and Iggy Pop recorded The Idiot and later where U2 cut Achtung Baby. "There's so many, not exactly ghosts...but vibrations in there," says Mills. "It's as very, very vibey place."

While in Berlin the band met up with longtime friend Patti Smith, who contributed vocals to the track "Blue." "Patti totally changed the song and added a whole other dimension to it," says Mills. "It was a powerful thing to watch." Another track, "It Happened Today," featured vocal contributions from Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam

The songs are also less political than the material on Accelerate. "It's more of a personal record than a political one," says Mills. "Current events do come into our mind when we write, but the themes here are more universal."

Other songs include the piano ballad "Walk It Back," a rocker called "All The Best" that features Mills and Michael Stipe sharing lead vocals and "Everyday Is Yours To Win"—which Mills describes as a "slow, beautiful song built around a guitar riff."

Mills says the group didn't always see eye-to-eye while recording the disc. "This one certainly has its share of difficulty—but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing," he says. "It just means you have creative tension, which is what happens when three strong-willed people manage to find a consensus."

This article reflects on R.EM's first few albums - what's your favourite REM era? Early Days, the Days of World Domination or the 'quiet' post Bill Berry era or or The Accelerated Period?

When R.E.M sneaked up in the early 80s with their debut album Murmur, few could have anticipated what the band meant - and would become.

Just as Talking Heads had become the banner-waver for emotionally distant New York art-rock a few years previously, R.E.M were the band which announced college rock radio could be as influential as mainstream stations. And that "alternative rock" in the age of Michael Jackson's Thriller, Bowie's Let's Dance and stadium fillers like ZZ Top, Bruce Springsteen and Tina Turner was a genre in itself.

Murmur in '83 came with an appropriate title: few could clearly decipher Michael Stipe's words in many songs but his weary delivery was seductive, especially against the gentle jangle of Peter Buck's guitar.

Critics would reference the Byrds on songs like Sitting Still and Shaking Through, but for R.E.M's audience that late 60s band was either ancient history or unfamiliar. R.E.M - out of Athens, Georgia - existed in a world of their own.

In a music environment cluttered with synth-rock - Duran Duran, the Thompson Twins - R.E.M's stripped back, frill-free guitar sound was distinctive, and even now Murmur, with its tired ballads (the sleepyPerfect Circle) and pure pop (We Walk) sounds timeless, never part of the world into which it had arrived.

It feels slightly strange (Stipe's lyrics were oblique) and even the cover - of the notoriously fast-growing kudzu grass - looks eerie and otherworldly. They also had a track listing on the cover which didn't match the record's running order. R.E.M were willfully mysterious at a time when people were being handed music in ready-to-use servings. You had to take your time with them.

By Reckoning the following year, R.E.M were honing their sound: Don't Go Back to Rockville and Pretty Persuasion could have slotted on to mainstream radio, although it didn't. Reviews were even more favourable than Murmur's, but by 80s standards the album remained a small seller - which worked for R.E.M's reputation as not being acceptable to mainstream listeners.

That status was enhanced by "outsider" artist Howard Finster's cover (from a drawing by Stipe) and the general moodiness of the music.

By the time of the more lyrically obscure but fascinating Fables of the Reconstruction the following year, R.E.M were college-rock favourites, leading the way for indie bands such as the Replacements and Buffalo Tom, artists like Peter Case, and paving a path for Flying Nun into US college radio.

By the end of the 80s R.E.M had been widely embraced, were signed to the major label Warners and their albums were topping the charts.

But R.E.M's first three albums were arguably their best, and have been reissued in beautifully expanded editions: Murmur with an extra disc of a taut, urgent gig recorded in a small Canadian club shortly after the album's release; Reckoning has an extra disc of a previously unreleased radio broadcast of a Chicago concert (opening with the Velvet Underground's Femme Fatale); and Fables of the Reconstruction (in a box) includes a disc of their excellent, spare demos in Athens before the London recording sessions and although you can hear the words ...

R.E.M.'s Manager Bertis Downs set fans this 'postcard' from Berlin....

Really great to be here on many levels-- one of the world's great cities and only being here a little while (like anywhere) really lets one get a sense of what the town is really like-- neighborhoods, people, customs and traditions, how people live and work and play here, not to mention why so many people visit here . . . Berlin has something going on all the time, that's for sure-- and in our little interest-area of great music, there has been a lot of that lately-- Pearl Jam last week and Patti Smith last night. We all went out to a venue we had never seen-- The Zitadelle on the edge of town, open air and basically the courtyard of a castle, complete with a moat that everyone crosses to get into the concert. Patti and her band were in top form and one forgets or fails to realize how many great, great songs she has written and performed over the years and then there you are, in this poetically perfect setting hearing song after song of incredible power and force and grace. Then toward the end of the set and again in the encore, the R.E.M. guys all played with the band, and to me, People Have The Power never sounded better-- a fun and very special night for the people and stage and off.

The band has teamed with Capitol/I.R.S. for the July 13 release of an expanded 25th Anniversary 2CD and digital edition of the band’s 1985 album, Fables Of The Reconstruction. The new edition features the digitally remastered original album, plus 14 previously unreleased demo recordings, cut prior to the album’s studio sessions, including one long-sought track that has never been released. The commemorative release also adds insightful new liner notes by Peter with the 2CD package presented in a lift-top box with a poster and four postcards. On the same date, the remastered original album will be released on 180-gram vinyl.

Fables Of The Reconstruction, recorded during the winter of 1985 in London, England, distant in geography, weather and culture from R.E.M.’s Athens, Georgia home, represented a musical step forward for the band.

Produced by Joe Boyd (also known for his work with British folk and folk-rock musicians, including Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, and Fairport Convention), Fables marked the beginning of a more narrative, storytelling lyrical style in R.E.M.’s songwriting, with its songs spinning vivid tales of everyday life in the American South.

Before going to London to record, R.E.M. huddled in Jim Hawkins’ Athens, Georgia studio for a few weeks of building new songs from fragments, including many which had emerged during soundchecks along the band’s 1984 tour.

In his liner notes, Peter Buck recalls, “The last day of rehearsal, I think with Joe Boyd in attendance, Jim Hawkins recorded what we had come up with. We spent about four hours recording all the new songs live, with minimal overdubs. I hadn't listened to this stuff since we recorded it, and I'm kind of stunned at how good it is. My memory of the rehearsals is us scrambling to finish songs. The songs on both Murmur and Reckoning had been performed for months if not years by the time they were committed to tape. I remember feeling dangerously unprepared when we flew to London, but on the evidence of this recording we must have known what we were doing.”

“The Athens Demos,” as R.E.M. has dubbed them, comprise the new edition’s second disc of 14 previously unreleased recordings, including drafts of Fables’ 11 songs and three additional tracks that didn’t make the album. The three non-album demos include two early versions of songs that were later revisited by the band and recorded for other releases and one song, “Throw Those Trolls Away,” making its release debut on this new edition.

In the U.S., Fables Of The Reconstruction peaked at #28 on The Billboard 200, and its singles, “Can’t Get There From Here” and “Driver 8,” reached #14 and #22 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, respectively. In the U.K., Fables reached #35, the band’s highest U.K. chart position to that point in their career.

“It's a personal favorite,” writes Buck, “and I'm really proud of how strange it is. Nobody but R.E.M. could have made that record. It took our four twisted personalities and the legendary Joe Boyd to make an album that character-filled and vibey.”

Peter, Mike, and Michael are back in the studio this week and have resumed work on their next record with Jacknife Lee and his team. As we reported back in November 2009, the band recorded demos with Lee in New Orleans in the Fall for what will serve as the follow-up to 2008's Accelerate.

"Since 1994, he has worked with R.E.M. both on stage and in the studio. While originally brought on as a second guitarist for the Monster tour, McCaughey has remained with R.E.M. in various capacities since then, contributing to the band's studio albums New Adventures In Hi-Fi, Up, Reveal, Around The Sun and Accelerate. Additionally, he has received credits for his work on the R.E.M. Live album as well as their 2003 greatest hits collection, In Time. When working with R.E.M., McCaughey plays guitar, bass, keyboards, and adds backing vocals."

Since joining R.E.M. as a supporting tour musician on the 1995 Monster tour (“Aneurysm ‘95” to the fans), McCaughey has become more than just a multi-instrumentalist. He has become a part of the very fabric that now makes R.E.M. today. Having been with the band at a time when it knew its identity and then suddenly had to search within itself for a new one after original drummer Bill Berry’s exit in 1997; McCaughey is now a fifteen year veteran with the band which now enters its third decade in existence.

R.E.M. closed the last decade with two of its most solid releases—2008’s Accelerate and 2009’s Live at the Olympia. The latter became the band’s second live album after 2007’s R.E.M. Live (coincidentally both albums are recorded in Dublin, Ireland). And although the band has opened up its vaults by including bonus live performances in its recent reissues of Murmur and Reckoning (and producer Joe Boyd revisiting Fables of the Reconstruction in the works), R.E.M. Live and Live at the Olympia were fully tailored live releases.

If R.E.M. Live is the reminder that the band can still pull off arena rock and still make it look fun, then Live at the Olympia is the best testament of how far the band has come since 1997. What the album says is that this is R.E.M., plain and simple.

Do you remember the earliest conversations of this idea (a live album) being proposed?

I don’t remember exactly when. I guess we were working on the record (Accelerate) in Vancouver. I don’t know if it was planned all along. I think it might have been, even before we started the record; it might have been in everybody’s head to go out and play the songs before the record was actually finished so we could test run them and see if there were things we discovered about them by playing them live. That definitely happened. Some of them didn’t change at all after playing them for the 5 nights in Dublin. Some changed quite a bit, and, on other ones we were able to fine tune them; we were able to kind of figure out what wasn’t working, maybe, by playing those nights. I think it was kind of in the plan all along when we were making that record. I could be wrong, but that’s the way I remember it.

At the time Accelerate came out, a lot of the interviews that Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Michael Stipe had done really gave me this impression that the post-assessment about Around the Sun was less than desirable. What was it like having gone through that recording process to now take a different turn, incorporate live performance and hit the refresh button?

Since Bill (Berry) quit the band, we’ve made three records that were all real studio records, and that’s not a bad thing. We were having a really great time. Each one kind of got, maybe, a little more convoluted and a little more drawn out. By the time Around the Sun got finished, I think we were kind of done with that process for a while (laughs). Peter, especially, was like, “I never want to make a record that takes that long, again.” I think he felt like that record was better after we had just gone in and played the songs in the studio before they got as much window dressing as they got. Some of the guitars got lost in the process.

We were pretty much determined to make a record where there was no possibility that could happen. Really, that meant mostly just playing songs with 2 guitars, bass and drums; play them live in the studio and not do a whole lot of overdubbing. So, it fit in perfectly to go and play them live with that kind of material. A lot of the Around the Sun songs ended up sounding—when we played them live—probably a lot better; a little more direct, a little more guitar oriented and stuff. That tends to happen with some of the studio stuff, anyway. It gets simplified when you play it live. With the Minus 5 it’s always like that. Most of the songs that we record that are piano songs we end up playing on guitar, ya know? Two guitars, bass, drums and let it fall where it may.

This time it just made sense for us to make a record that was not going to be as labored over and can just be really fun, bash it out live and not get hung up in the process of making a record.

In listening to everything that you’re saying, it seems like Accelerate kind of tied back to, in some ways, how 1996’s New Adventures In Hi-Fi was made.

Yeah, that’s true to a degree. The difference with New Adventures was mostly songs that were being developed as we were actually touring. There were a few things from Accelerate that had probably gotten developed on the tour before that, things we played at soundchecks and stuff. Yeah, there’s similarities to the approach.

What were your feelings as you were walking out on stage for the first of the five nights? I assume Peter still does the setlist. So, once the setlist was written up and you guys were ready to go, what do you remember back then?

It was kind of frantic. Besides the fact that we’re playing all these new songs that we never played before live, we kept adding, everyday during a two hour soundcheck, other songs to play. Most of those other ones that I played live I’d never really played before; we did a lot of really old songs, and I just never really played most of those. Neither had Bill (Rieflin)! We were learning songs for hours at soundcheck before each night, as well as going over the new stuff. Then we’d have about an hour or two off and then play the show. It was pretty hardcore. It was a full day’s work, everyday, and, after soundcheck, I’d be cramming and trying to remember how to play “Little America” or something like that that I’d never played before, so, it was actually really intense. Once we got on stage, they were super fun. I had a great time. I didn’t worry too much about playing everything perfectly. I tried, of course, but I’m sure I failed on occasion (laughs).
It’s kind amazing how great it sounds. I know that Jacknife (Lee) didn’t fix a lot of stuff or anything. He just kind of found the best takes. You can tell there’s rough edges to it, but that’s cool.

And it keeps in spirit of what the whole project was all about.

Yeah. It’s kind of a great record though. I like the pacing and sequencing. It’s just such a bizarre huge grouping of songs. The focus of it is really early stuff and then the really new stuff. R.E.M.’s most famous and biggest songs are totally unrepresented. Their biggest records, Automatic for the People and Out of Time, aren’t there at all…I think “Drive” was played. It’s pretty cool. I like the selection of songs. We were just picking them each day. They were just coming out of nowhere. It wasn’t like we had this big masterplan. We didn’t (laughs).

From the musician standpoint, I know most of these songs, the older material, have popped up here and there—not very often—since the Monster tour. Thinking about songs from Fables of the Reconstruction or Chronic Town, what did you appreciate about those songs and the work that was originally done on them once you got to play them? For how old some of those songs are, they still sound great…

Because they’re really weird songs (laughs). Musically, stuff like “Little America,” “Wolves, Lower,” and “Carnival of Sorts,” I’m like, “What the hell were you guys doing? How do write songs like that?” You can tell they’re songs that are written by a band and not by one guy sitting around with a guitar. They’re not singer/songwriter songs, which is kind of what I’m used to. There’s a different logic to the way they’re constructed. They’re a little tricky for me to get my head around. Peter’s guitar playing is so individual and so precise. A lot of the songs, I just wanted to stay out of his way. I had to figure out things that I could play that wouldn’t muddle up the songs but add a little force to them. I think it worked out well. They sound really loud and trashy. It’s kind of cool to hear them sounding a little differently than they do on the original record. Peter’s got a heavier guitar sound, and you can actually hear the lyrics (laughs). You start realizing songs like “Second Guessing” have basically one verse sung over and over again (laughs). It works somehow. They’re very strange songs, and it was really interesting to play them, for me, because it’s a whole different style of songwriting than what I’m used to.

Did you get any impression from Rieflin? I would have loved to ask Bill this, about taking on Berry’s early work. ’95 was the only time I ever saw Bill Berry with the band. But to hear Chronic Town songs and hear how much is going on with the drums, however direct, there’s still a lot of presence there. Did he (Rieflin) share any thoughts of what it was like to perform that work?

I think there were times when he was definitely really, really impressed with how cool the drum parts were, and, other times, he was probably slightly amused because Bill’s (Berry) drum parts are really cool and really unusual. A lot of people don’t give him the credit that he should get. Bill Berry was a pretty amazing drummer, and he wasn’t really playing like anybody else back then. Rieflin did an amazing job at being faithful to those parts, not slavishly, but they kind of have to be there to make the songs work the way they did because they’re pretty intricate and precise kind of songs. I think Bill really appreciated Bill Berry’s drumming and really nailed it. The thing that I was most impressed about on the record was listening to Bill’s drumming. I just think he’s so awesome on this, and the drums sound really amazing, too. They’re super powerful and really rock. Hats off to Rieflin.

So, what’s currently happening in R.E.M. land? You guys were down in New Orleans doing some recording.

We did 3 weeks of work and tracked a bunch of new songs. Michael sang on about half of them, probably. So, we got a really good start on the next record.

Are there other locales in mind for recording, like Vancouver?

We’re not going to Vancouver. We’ve got a couple more stops in mind. I don’t think they’re exactly nailed down, yet. We’ll do two more three week stays, but the next one probably isn’t going to be until April into May. So, there’s a lot of time right now to sit around and ruminate on the songs or come up with new stuff; mostly for Michael to work on lyrics, melody and stuff. He’ll probably end up doing something before the rest of us get back. He might just go somewhere with Jacknife and record some more vocals. He’s got some great stuff. We got a really good start. The tracks all sound amazing, and the stuff that Michael has come up with are super cool, too. I’m pretty excited about it.

Right now, I’m not thinking about it for a little while. I’m going to let it go a bit and then get back to it, but I’m really happy with the stuff we did in New Orleans.

Font me! R.E.M. have released not a new single.. but a font selection

They do cost more than an itunes single though...

In the past, R.E.M. have had countless unique logos and typography. From Ed Rogers’ handwriting on Out Of Time to the many hand-drawn song titles of Reckoning, typography has been an important part of R.E.M.’s artwork. Until recently, individual letterforms were made as needed, but for the last five years, Michael Stipe and Chris Bilheimer have been creating entire alphabets and turning them into fonts to use for the band’s artwork.

Joining forces with the type foundry TypeTrust and its Athens-based co-owner Neil Summerour, we have turned these fonts into digital files available for download. We are proud to offer these three typefaces for sale:

ACCELERATE: This font was created for the album Accelerate and used on many projects such singles, tour advertising, merchsndise, and the supernatural superserious.com website.

TOURFONT: Tourfont was created in 2003 for In Time: The Best of R.E.M. packaging and the 2003 tour.

ORANGE: Based on a stencil made of orange plastic, this typeface was made for the album Around The Sun and used frequently on tour merchandise.

Thanks to Neil, these fonts are available in the TrueType and OpenType PS format and compatible with Mac and PC. Please visit the TypeTrust site to check them out.
